Photographers: Do Not Delete Matterport 3D Showcase Models on Your iPad

Matterport 3D Showcase WalkAround™ virtual tour experience by We Get Around Chief Photographer Dan Smigrod.

Do not delete your Matterport 3D Showcase models within the Capture app on your iPad. You may need the models when Matterport offers additional features that require re-uploading and re-processing of the existing (or edited) models.

For example, the Matterport 3D Showcase Processing System was updated in 2014 to:

  1. set Start Location
  2. improve White Balance
  3. improve Brightness
  4. Label Rooms in Floor Plan View
  5. enable successful outdoor nighttime models (improved chromatic noise)

Once Matterport Cloud Hosting enables viewing by Floor Plan, you may want to go back to models to edit and re-process. ("Editing and re-uploading models will continue to be free," according the 23 December 2014 eBlast from Matterport Support to its camera users.)

"Imagine new Matterport features that we will want to edit and re-process our existing models," says We Get Around Chief Photographer Dan Smigrod. "I can imagine Matterport enabling clickable links within the model; adding an augmented reality overlay; and setting true North for mobile viewing with gyro control. I also imagine third-party API integration with in models such as Buy Now buttons such as Amazon, hotels, tickets and events."

So how do you save models once your iPad is nearly full? Dan recommends using a new Apple ID and new Apple iCloud account in an unexpected way.

  1. When your iPad is nearly full, back it up one last time to iCloud.
  2. Erase all content and settings (as if your iPad was new)
  3. Use a new Apple ID and new Apple iCloud account.
  4. When your iPad is nearly full (again), repeat above.

What new 3D Showcase features do you imagine Matterport adding that might require re-editing and re-processing of the models?
