It seems appropriate that the College of Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE) at Kennesaw State University (KSU) – recognized for its quality innovative programs – is the first College in the United States to experiment with the commercial use of the Matterport 3D Showcase experience.

CCPE is exploring the impact of this innovative, interactive virtual tour experience to help increase enrollment and rental space revenue.

"Matterport 3D Showcases are Google Street-View-like immersive experiences on Steroids," says We Get Around Chief Photographer Dan Smigrod who captured and created the KSU CCPE spaces over multiple days. "In addition to the 'get there before you go' experience; it's crazy-exciting to offer; 'shoot today and get the 3D Showcase and CAD wireframe tomorrow.'"

"We are excited to be able to showcase KSU Center as well as a few of our unique spaces like the Culinary kitchen, Joe R. Edwards Law Library and Medical Assisting classroom," said Barbara Calhoun, dean of the College.

"With this virtual tour, anyone can get a 360-degree experience of what we have here," she said. "That's helpful for students, who can see where they'll be taking classes, and for community and business leaders, who can see the excellent venue we have for conferences and professional events. Best of all, it's cutting-edge technology, and that's right where we like to be — at the forefront of new ideas and new developments."

In addition to embedding 3D Showcases within its soon-to-be updated website, CCPE will:

  • offer other KSU departments (building renovation, CAD design classes) the object files (.obj) for importing wireframe into CAD software
  • use links within social media postings
  • capture still images within the virtual tour for tradition photography needs
  • offer media embed code and links

We Get Around is the first Georgia photography services company to license the Matterport tech and use the Matterport Pro 3D Camera for capture of three-dimensional data and two-dimensional images to create the three dimensional showcase virtual tours.

"While I was capturing the CCPE space, I noticed two students locating their classes for the upcoming courses," says Dan. "Yet another use for the Matterport 3D Showcases of the College of Continuing and Professional Education at KSU."

"While I captured the Culinary classroom, I could imagine the chef instructor letting the students know, ''If you want to show your friends what a real professional kitchen looks like, send them the link to our 3D Showcase and they can peek behind the scenes."
