3D Models: Matterport Versus Floored

Matterport and Floored are the same, but different and complimentary.

With the Matterport Pro 3D Camera, photographers create three-dimensional models of real spaces. The camera captures both photography and the data necessary to create the photorealistic interactive 3D models.

The Floored team re-imagines and renders 3D models of modified real places – or places yet to be built – to enable people to 'walk around' to visual the potential of a space.

The Floored team can begin re-imagining and rendering an existing space from the raw data – the object file (.obj) – that the Matterport camera – or the Floored camera – captures (while also shooting the photography).

Matterport has announced plans for its 3D Design Studio by year-end to enable re-imagining of real spaces captured with the Matterport camera.

Both Matterport and Floored have announced Oculus virtual reality viewing strategies. Matterport has publicly shared a demo of Matterport 3D Showcase viewed on Sony Gear VR powered by Oculus. While Matterport has released a Matterport to Oculus Rift Conversion Process, the short-answer is that the process is not yet easy or fast to implement commercially. Floored has announced custom client Oculus solutions.

Floored was started after its Co-Founder, David Eisenberg, saw a Matterport demo and envisioned how places captured by the Matterport camera could be re-imagined and rendered.

According to Architectural Digest (October 2013): "You can examine space as it would look in real life," says Eisenberg, who conceived the venture after attending a hacker meet-up in Silicon Valley. There he discovered Matterport, a state-of-the art camera able to take 3D scans of a room. Using the device as a starting point, the Floored team developed its own software to create refined, widely accessible digital models models through which users can zoom in and around."

Both Matterport and Floored enable users of their immersive, interactive 3D models to experience the space, as if they are there via taps on a smartphone or tablet; clicking or using the keyboard on a laptop or desktop and simply head turning with new viewing devices such as Gear VR powered by Oculus.

Matterport 3D Showcases are typically ready for viewing the next day. Floored can complete most 3D models within one to two weeks.

Which solution is right for you? Both solutions can help people make confident real estate decisions about renting, leasing, buying, building, and renovating. Plus, in the travel space, experiencing, visiting, staying, attending, booking, reserving and buying. (Plus, 101 other uses for these visual storytelling solutions.)

The Matterport solution enables people to virtually experience spaces that exists today. Floored solution enables people to virtually experience either an existing space re-imagined, or a planned space (even before it has been built).

Over time, it's likely that that the two platforms will be more "same" than "different" and continue to be compliment each other. Plus, with third-party solutions, such as the We Get Around FloorMe with Matterport – interactive floor plans created from the Matterport object file – it's likely that our real estate agent, brokerage, hospitality and film/TV clients will have even more options and features to choose from as photography and imagination are powered by three-dimensional data and viewable even in ways not yet announced (such as Microsoft HoloLens holographic computing).

"I can imagine a Venture Capital lead roll-up of both Matterport and Floored to create a virtual reality / augmented reality company of over 100 visual computing engineers, 3D artists, architects and design professionals," says We Get Around Founder, CEO and Chief Photographer Dan Smigrod whom is also founder of the We Get Around Network of Matterport Photographers. "Viewing the 3D models of the combined companies would generate a 'WOW! I'm FLOORED" reaction that is far better than each company can create on its own and the game-changing solutions could be offered sooner, faster and in an easier way for leveraging by residential and commercial real estate; travel, hospitality and tourism; and film/TV location scouting."

"We're already starting to see Platforms such as Zillow treat 3D Tour video as mainstream to helping sell real estate," says Smigrod. "Buyers should have a choice of exploring a space "as is" and/or "as possible."

The Real Deal (1 October 2013) reported "Eisenberg recently worked with an apartment owner in a white-glove building who was selling her apartment, but didn't want any of her personal items or family photos visible on the listing broker's website. So 'we scanned the apartment and stripped out all the furniture, ...'"

Adding furniture to 3D models will get easier over time as every furniture piece is delivered with a corresponding object file (.obj) to enable 'pick and place' furniture. This is demonstrated in a Matterport video envisioning how its 3D Studio solution might work. While video fly-throughs can be generated from Matterport 3D Showcases manually today, Matterport plans to automate this process within its 3D Studio solution. The Floorer team creates video fly-throughs of its 3D models.

"While both Matterport and Floored offer exciting solution today for residential and commercial real estate; travel, tourism and hospitality; and film/TV location scouting," says Smigrod, "the future can't arrive soon enough for new visualization solutions by Matterport and Floored."
